Kamal Matli

My name is Dr. Kamal Matli, and I am an interventional and structural cardiologist at UF Health. I treat complex coronary artery disease and structural heart disease using advanced, catheter-based therapies that may allow patients to be treated without open-heart surgery. My areas of focus include complex and high-risk coronary intervention, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), transcatheter mitral and tricuspid valve repair and replacement, left atrial appendage closure for stroke prevention, PFO and ASD closure, intravascular imaging, and advanced hemodynamic assessment.

My interest in cardiology is also deeply personal. Cardiovascular disease has affected several members of my family, and early on I wanted to understand heart disease well enough to help the people closest to me. That motivation ultimately grew into something broader: I wanted to develop the expertise to care for every patient with the same sense of responsibility I would have for someone in my own family. What drew me to interventional cardiology was the chance to combine careful clinical reasoning with hands-on skill in a way that makes an immediate, tangible difference in a patient’s life. Your heart is never just a single test result. I look at your symptoms, your anatomy, your imaging and your overall health together to find the treatment that is truly right for you. Sometimes that means performing a complex procedure, and sometimes it means recognizing that a procedure isn’t the best option at all. Either way, I want you to leave my office understanding exactly what I recommend and why.

My training took me through Lebanon, France, Canada and the United States, and each step shaped the physician I am today. I completed medical school and my early cardiology training at Lebanese American University, then pursued advanced cardiology training at the Université de Strasbourg and interventional training at L’Institut Mutualiste Montsouris in Paris, an institution with a longstanding tradition of cardiovascular innovation and a historic role in the development of transcatheter aortic valvetherapies (TAVR). I went on to complete a two-year, Royal College-accredited fellowship ininterventional cardiology at the Université de Montréal and CHUM, followed by advanced fellowship training in structural heart disease at UMass Chan Medical School and UMass Memorial Medical Center, where I also held attending physician responsibilities. Training and practicing across four countries and different health systems has given me abroad perspective on cardiovascular care and allows me to draw on techniques, technologies and advances from leading centers around the world.

One of the parts of medicine I value most is the relationship I build with my patients and their families. Facing coronary artery disease, valve disease or a major heart procedure can be intimidating, and I never want you to feel like just a case on a schedule. My goal is always to keep your care individualized,evidence-based and centered on what matters to you.
